The term "IQ score" is widely used but poorly defined. There are a
large number of tests with different scales. The result on one test of
132 can be the same as a score 148 on another test. Some
intelligence tests don't use IQ scores at all.
Mensa has set a percentile as cutoff to avoid this confusion.
Candidates for membership of Mensa must achieve a score at or
above the 98th percentile on a standard test of intelligence (a score
that is greater than that achieved by 98 percent of the general
population taking the test).
Generally, there are two ways to prove that you qualify for Mensa:
- Take the Mensa test (scroll down to the bottom of this page
for testing dates)
or
- Submit a qualifying test score from one of the accepted
supervised, standardized tests like the Stanford-Binet or
the WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) test (contact
our national testing psychologist for more info)
Mensa has no eligibility requirements other than IQ testing.
However, some tests are not valid for people under the age of 16.
Mensa South Africa is aware of several websites claiming to offer
online 'Mensa IQ tests'. Online IQ tests can be a lot of fun to do and,
in some cases, the results can be highly accurate. However, these
websites are operating without approval from Mensa and
are in direct breach of Mensa's trademark. Where the society is able
to locate the website owners, it is instructing them to remove any
reference to Mensa. More importantly, Mensa is concerned that
members of the public may be misled into thinking they are taking
an official Mensa Supervised IQ Test. Mensa South Africa does not
currently operate an online IQ test and does not accept online test
results as evidence for membership to the society.
