DO I QUALIFY?

The only qualification for joining Mensa is an IQ in the top 2% of the population. In other words, 1 in every 50 South Africans is eligible. It is important to bear in mind, though, that the actual test score relating to a particular IQ will vary from test to test.

The regional chapters of Mensa South Africa organise regular, supervised testing sessions. Two tests are written, one lasting 45 minutes and the other 20 minutes. The tests are calibrated for a minimum age of 15, but there are other tests for younger children that are recognised by Mensa - our youngest member is only 5! The tests are graded by a qualified psychologist. To qualify for membership, you need to score in the top 2% of standardised scores on only one of the tests, and your results will be available within a day or two of taking the test .

Alternatively, you may choose to be tested privately by a registered psychologist, or you may already have achieved a qualifying score on a test recognised by Mensa - in which case, simply submit your score and the contact details of the psychologist who supervised your test to our National Testing Psychologist.

If you qualify, you will be invited to join Mensa South Africa and will be required to pay membership fees. Annual membership fees for the current year are between R150 and R195, depending on your category of membership. You will only ever need to qualify once for Mensa membership. If your membership lapses, you will simply need to submit proof of your initial qualifying result and renew your subscription. If you move to another country, simply notify your regional committee, and the transfer of your membership will be arranged.

Please click on one of the links at the top of the page to contact the Testing Co-ordinator in your region. Booking is essential as dates and numbers need to be finalised and payment is required in advance - in some regions you can pay when you arrive for the test. It is wise to book early since there are limited seats and sessions are often oversubscribed. The co-ordinator also needs to ensure that sufficient test sheets are available in your language.
