Q: I suspect my child is gifted. Where can I get more information or have my child tested?
A: Guidelines for identifying potentially gifted children In the literature on gifted children several indicators of giftedness are provided. It is possible that all children will show some of the characteristics listed. Although the following guidelines are not meant to be total reliable indicators of a child's ability, it will assist parents to know what kinds of things to look for that they may otherwise miss. Dr Linda Kreger Silverman provides the following characteristics of giftedness: • Reasons well (good thinker) • Learns rapidly • Has extensive vocabulary • Has an excellent memory • Has a long attention span (if interested) • Sensitive (feelings hurt easily) • Shows compassion • Perfectionistic • Intense • Morally sensitive • Has strong curiosity • Perseverant in their interests • Has high degree of energy • Prefers older companions or adults • Has a wide range of interests • Has a great sense of humor • Early or avid reader (if too young to read, loves being read to) • Concerned with justice, fairness • Judgment mature for age at times • Is a keen observer • Has a vivid imagination • Is highly creative • Tends to question authority • Has facility with numbers • Good at jigsaw puzzles or mazes. Dr Silverman has found that 84% of the children whose parents say that they fit ¾ of the characteristics set out above, score at least 120 IQ (the superior range). The following can also be added to this list: • Advanced development through the developmental milestones • Highly alert to the external environment during infancy • Less need for sleep during infancy • Vivid imagination • Desire to direct others in play and in group activities As a parent of a gifted child you face the challenge of keeping this gifted, inquisitive child busy! This can be a very daunting task. If you do think your child is gifted, it's important to do some learning of your own to understand your child's personality and abilities to better match activities and toys to the child's interests. This includes not only interests, but gender differences, learning differences and personality differences. You can view the MAGIC database of resources by clicking here. Q: ONLINE IQ TESTS - I did one online that says 'Mensa Approved'. Do you accept these results?
A: Mensa South Africa is aware of several websites claiming to offer online 'Mensa IQ tests'. Online IQ tests can be a lot of fun to do and, in some cases, the results can be highly accurate. However, these websites are operating without approval from Mensa and are in direct breach of Mensa's trademark. Where the society is able to locate the website owners, it is instructing them to remove any reference to Mensa. More importantly, Mensa is concerned that members of the public may be misled into thinking they are taking an official Mensa Supervised IQ Test. Mensa South Africa does not currently operate an online IQ test and does not accept online test results as evidence for membership to the society. Membership of Mensa is open to anyone who has an IQ score in the top two per cent of the population, measured by a recognised IQ test. This can be through prior evidence of testing, a psychologist's report, or by taking part in a Mensa Supervised IQ Test session.
