WHAT IS MENSA? WHAT DOES MENSA OFFER?

WHAT DOES MENSA OFFER?

Mensa South Africa has five regions:
Johannesburg, Pretoria, Kwazulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape

Our activities include:

  • The exchange of ideas and opinions through lectures, discussions and journals;
  • Exploration of specific fields of interest through Special Interest Groups (SIGs);
  • Local, regional, national and international gatherings.

Each region arranges local meetings and activities, and many regions have several activities organised each month. Activities may take the form of a talk by an invited speaker who is an expert in his or her specific field or endeavour, a wine tasting, a video evening, a weekend trail hike, a trivia quiz, a pub evening, a trip to a museum or planetarium, or a choice of many other interesting events.

Members who are resident more than 100km away from a regional centre are classified as remote members, although they can elect to belong to any one of the regions. Remote members are, however, welcome to attend events organised by any of the local regions.

An annual gathering is hosted by a different region each year. The AG provides an opportunity for MENSAns to get away from it all, meet members from other regions, participate in the events and have fun.

Mensans travelling in SA and overseas may make contact with branches in the areas they are visiting, by contacting the local SIGHT (Service for International Guidance and Hospitality to Travelers) Officer, who will assist with local information and may also arrange short-term accommodation with local Mensans.

Within the society, members form Special Interest Groups(SIGs) to share ideas and information on a common interest. That interest might be sport, chess, a supper club, flying, etc.

Above all, MENSA provides a forum for social interaction between people of similar intelligence and offers an opportunity for members to be exposed to many and varied fields of interest and ideas. This in turn brings about stimulating conversation, heated debates, and long-lasting friendships.
